Gemma Carter died on 8th June 1999 aged 13 years. Gemma lived with mum Sharon, brother Michael
,cousin Robert and her Nanna. Gemma was on a school trip to France when she tragically drowned.
Gemma was a kind and generous person always laughing and singing round the house. (Bless her,she
couldn't sing a note). 'mum' she would say ' i am going to be Celine Dion on Stars in their Eyes,'
with her constant practising and determination she probarbly would have made it in the end. Gemma
was so like me in many ways, always wanting to please and trying to find the best in everyone who
she met. Gemma wasn't a selfish girl, she wanted to be a vet from being about 6,always watching vet
programmes and knowing that was the path she wanted to go down. Gemma's death has left a massive
void in my family's life, there is never a day goes by when i dont think of her, even if it's not
when I wake, her loss hits me like a knife at some point. I often wonder what she would be doing
now, boyfriend, married, even children. My heart aches for those things you wish for your child, I
saw one of her friends with her boyfriend and it hurt so much my eyes clouded with tears wishing
Gemma had had that chance. Most of all I miss her infectous laugh. She wasn't afraid to laugh out
loud, and when you did, Gemma ,everyone laughed with you. I hope you make them laugh in heaven
darling,I will miss you forever. No matter how I carry on with my life I know a part of me died with
you. I will treasure you my beatiful child till the end. Love you now and always your heartbroken

I stood by your bed last night;
I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying you found it hard to sleep.
I spoke to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
'It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here.'
I was close to you at breakfast,
I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached to me.
I was with you at the shops today; your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today; you tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you, that I'm not lying there.
I flew with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently landed on you; I smiled and said, 'it's me.'
You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair. I tried so hard to let you know, that I was there.
It's possible for me, to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, 'I never went away.'
You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew...
in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning and say 'good-night, God bless, I'll see you in the morning.'
And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll fly across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you,
there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out...
then come home to be with me.
